BLS reports a 6.3% annual increase in final-demand producer prices. The measure excluding foods, energy and trade services rose 0.5% for the month.

U.S. final-demand producer prices rose 1.3% in September on a seasonally adjusted basis, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on October 15. That followed increases of 0.5% in August and 0.2% in July. The September monthly advance was the largest since March 2022. On an unadjusted 12-month basis, final-demand prices increased 6.3%, the largest rise since December 2022. The monthly and annual comparisons use different seasonal-adjustment treatments and should not be treated as interchangeable measures. Final-demand goods prices increased 2.6%. More than 80% of that rise came from energy goods, which jumped 10.8%. Gasoline prices rose 20.3% and accounted for half of the goods increase, according to BLS. Final-demand services prices rose 0.8%. Nearly half of that increase reflected a 1.4% rise in trade-service margins. Transportation and warehousing service prices increased 3.4%, while services excluding trade, transportation and warehousing increased 0.3%. The index excluding foods, energy and trade services rose 0.5% in September and 5.0% over 12 months. That measure is narrower than headline PPI and is not the same as simply excluding food and energy. BLS also revised some May-through-August figures for late reports and corrections. What to watch: compare the headline increase with the narrower measure and the energy contribution rather than attributing the entire move to one category. PPI describes prices received by producers; this release does not by itself establish a consumer-inflation outcome, market reaction or Federal Reserve decision.
