Initial claims dropped by 1,000 in the week ending Sept. 19 when economists expected a rise to 201,000.

Initial jobless claims fell to 197,000 in the week ending Sept. 19, down 1,000 from a revised 198,000 the week before, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected claims to rise to 201,000, Dow Jones reported. Continuing claims, which run a week behind, totaled 1.72 million in the week ending Sept. 12, up 2,000 from the prior week's downwardly revised total. The numbers land a week after the Federal Reserve raised its target range by a quarter point to 3.75% to 4%. On Thursday, New York Fed President John Williams said it would be "reasonable" to see another rate hike by the end of the year. Low layoffs give the Fed little reason to hold back while inflation stays above its 2% target, Dow Jones noted.
