The October 8 EIA release puts Lower 48 working gas 130 Bcf below a year earlier and 68 Bcf above the five-year average. Stocks are not a household-price forecast.

The US Energy Information Administration's October 8, 2026 Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report estimates Lower 48 working gas in underground storage at 3,500 billion cubic feet for the week ended October 2. That is 85 Bcf higher than the previous week's 3,415 Bcf. Stocks were 130 Bcf below the year-earlier level of 3,630 Bcf, a 3.6 percent difference. They were 68 Bcf above the 2021-2025 five-year average of 3,432 Bcf, or 2.0 percent. The EIA says the total remains within the five-year historical range. The figures describe working gas stored underground in the Lower 48, not a national retail-price index or a total including every form of natural gas storage. A weekly net injection and the amount already in storage are separate measures. Regional results were mixed. The East and Midwest added 22 Bcf and 26 Bcf respectively, the Pacific added 4 Bcf, and the South Central region added 28 Bcf. EIA warns that totals may differ from the sum of components because of independent rounding. The table does not establish why the weekly change occurred or how household heating bills will move. The draft's claims about weather, export demand, inflation and Fed policy are therefore omitted. A storage level alone is not a guarantee against a winter price increase. The next release is scheduled for October 15. The report's figures are estimates subject to sampling uncertainty. Keeping the observation week and release date attached to the table helps prevent a prior report from being read as current.
