The U.S. Producer Price Index for final demand increased 0.4 percent in August 2026, led by a 1.1-percent increase in final demand goods and a 4.2-percent rise in energy prices.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Producer Price Index for final demand increased by 0.4 percent in August 2026 on a seasonally adjusted basis. This increase follows a 0.1-percent rise in July and a 0.1-percent decline in June. On an unadjusted basis, the final demand index advanced 5.4 percent over the 12-month period ending in August 2026. A primary driver of the August advance was the index for final demand goods, which rose 1.1 percent after two consecutive monthly declines. More than three-fourths of the broad-based gain in final demand goods was due to energy prices, which surged 4.2 percent. In particular, diesel fuel prices jumped 24.1 percent, accounting for over a third of the monthly increase in final demand goods prices. Meanwhile, final demand services edged up 0.1 percent in August, marking its third straight monthly increase. The rise in services was led by a 2.3-percent advance in transportation and warehousing services, with truck transportation of freight increasing 2.0 percent. Conversely, trade services margins fell 0.2 percent, influenced by an 11.3-percent decline in retailing margins for fuels and lubricants. Excluding foods, energy, and trade services, core final demand prices moved up 0.3 percent in August and grew 4.7 percent year-over-year. In intermediate demand, prices for processed goods rose 1.8 percent, unprocessed goods rose 1.1 percent, and services increased 0.3 percent. Higher pipeline costs, particularly in energy and freight, reflect potential upward pressures on production inputs, though overall market impacts remain subject to broader economic factors and should be interpreted cautiously without assuming specific financial outcomes.
