BEA and Census reported October 6 that the August goods and services deficit rose 13.7% to $105.6 billion. Exports were $315.2 billion and imports $420.8 billion. July was revised to a $92.8 billion deficit.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis and Census Bureau released August 2026 international trade data on October 6. The goods and services deficit was $105.6 billion, compared with $92.8 billion in July, revised. The release reports a $12.7 billion increase, or 13.7 percent. Rounded headline levels need not subtract to the published change because underlying values have greater precision. Exports totaled $315.2 billion, up $4.5 billion from July. Imports totaled $420.8 billion, up $17.2 billion. Imports increased more than exports, widening the gap. The headline percentage changes were 1.4 percent for exports and 4.3 percent for imports. The goods deficit increased $12.8 billion to $136.6 billion. The services surplus increased by less than $0.1 billion to $31.0 billion. A goods-only balance is not the same as the combined goods and services balance. Year to date, the combined deficit decreased $138.2 billion, or 19.9 percent, from the same period in 2025. Exports increased $267.7 billion, or 11.8 percent, and imports increased $129.5 billion, or 4.4 percent. The monthly widening therefore should not be described as a year-to-date widening. These data are seasonally adjusted but are not adjusted for price changes. They measure nominal cross-border flows, not a direct real-GDP contribution or proof of any single policy's effect. July is revised; the figures are not final for all time. Source: BEA and Census, U.S. International Trade in Goods and Services, August 2026, released October 6.
