EIA Reported U.S. Working Natural Gas in Storage at 3,169 Bcf on August 14

EIA’s August 20 weekly report put Lower 48 working natural gas in underground storage at 3,169 billion cubic feet as of August 14, up 16 Bcf from the preceding week.

CONFIRMED FACTS The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that working natural gas in underground storage in the Lower 48 states was 3,169 billion cubic feet (Bcf) on Friday, August 14, 2026. That was 16 Bcf above the August 7 level of 3,153 Bcf. EIA released the report on August 20, 2026. EIA reported that the August 14 stock level was 28 Bcf, or 0.9%, below the year-earlier level of 3,197 Bcf and 185 Bcf, or 6.2%, above the 2021–25 five-year average of 2,984 Bcf. The report states that total working gas was within the five-year historical range. ANALYSIS The 16-Bcf weekly increase is smaller than the 36-Bcf increase EIA reported for the preceding week. The stock level remains modestly below the year-ago figure while standing above the five-year average, so the two reference comparisons point in different directions. UNKNOWNS AND LIMITS This release measures working gas in underground storage in the Lower 48 states; it is not a measure of all U.S. natural-gas supply, production, consumption, or liquefied-natural-gas inventories. The report does not identify the causes of the weekly change or establish how natural-gas prices will move. EIA publishes sampling-variability measures alongside the estimates, and regional figures are rounded, so weekly movements should not be interpreted as exact facility-level measurements.
