The U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis reported that the seasonally adjusted goods-and-services deficit was $73.3 billion in June 2026, down $4.4 billion from a revised $77.6 billion in May. The release measures trade in dollars and is not adjusted for price changes.
June exports were $314.7 billion, down $2.9 billion from May, while imports were $388.0 billion, down $7.3 billion. The release says the deficit narrowed because the goods deficit fell $3.9 billion to $102.1 billion and the services surplus rose $0.5 billion to $28.8 billion. Goods exports declined $4.0 billion; services exports rose $1.1 billion. Goods imports fell $7.9 billion, while services imports rose $0.6 billion.
The agencies also revised May: goods exports were revised up $0.3 billion, services exports down $0.4 billion, goods imports down $0.2 billion, and services imports up $0.2 billion.
ANALYSIS
Because imports fell more than exports in June, the smaller monthly deficit reflects both sides of trade rather than an export-only improvement. The release’s nominal, seasonally adjusted totals are useful for tracking the monthly balance, but they are not a direct measure of inflation-adjusted output or household wellbeing.
UNKNOWNS AND LIMITS
The release does not establish a durable trade trend or forecast future deficits. Monthly trade estimates can be revised, and the agencies note that the data are subject to nonsampling errors, including reporting, timing, and data-capture errors. The figures are on a balance-of-payments basis unless otherwise specified.
